SMART EQProgramme Details

Children between 8 – 12 years old

 

Objectives:

1)    To improve self-esteem

2)    To increase the level of self-control and encourage reflective thinking

3)    To help the child identify the thoughts that go through his/her mind and to develop a positive mind-set

4)    To improve the child’s ability in coping with stress through relaxation techniques

5)    To increase the child’s ability to overcome fears by building a BRAVE Step Plan

6)    To increase the child’s ability to solve problems effectively by using a 3-step Decision Making Process, taking into account his/her own point of view as well as others’

7)    To teach the child effective communication skills, to be assertive without being passive or aggressive

8)    To teach the child effective negotiating skills and to work towards mutually agreeable outcomes

9)    To help every student value and implement practices that promote personal growth and well being.

10) To recognise that everyone has the right to feel valued and be safe, and in this regard, understand their rights and obligations and behave responsibly.

Session 1: Planning for Fun Activities. Students discuss and plan fun activities. They will also learn how to develop respect for the opinions and experience of others.

Session 2:  Identifying my Feelings. As being aware of one’s feelings is an essential first step in managing one’s emotions, students learn to identify their emotions and the emotions of others; and express their emotions in an appropriate manner.

Session 3: Comfortable and Uncomfortable Feelings. Students understand that their bodies can give them clues to how they and others are feeling.

Session 4: Feelings & Situations. Students learn about how situations can affect their feelings and how to use compliments to generate sincere positive feelings.

Session 7: Being Brave. Students learn how to overcome their fears by taking small steps in any scary situation.

Session 8: The Thought-Feeling Connection. Students explore the link between thoughts and feelings, and apply this knowledge to challenging situations in their lives.

Session 9: Helpful & Unhelpful Thinking. Students explore the different types of thinking they can choose from in response to different situations and learn to develop positive and helpful thought processes.

Session 11: Looking for Evidence to Change Our Thoughts. Students learn to evaluate the accuracy of their thoughts by searching for evidence before accepting them – especially helpful when thoughts are negative.

Session 12: Decision-making. Students learn how to implement a 3-step process when making decisions in interpersonal situations.
